It's functional!!

the now "infamous" bathroom ...

which began as a pile of rubble in the garage after we tore it totally apart.

There was insulation hanging at half mast when we took off the ceiling ... so we had to keep going ... right up to the roof .. and even outside into the ridge vent ... (the roof was being re-done by roofers working above us while we ripped out the whole bathroom.)

and dry rot under the shower curb ....

..... then we had to take up all of the floor to get at plumbing, electrical wiring, heating ducts, etc... and most of the basement is finished..so had to be careful not to touch the top portion of the basement ceiling drywall... ..it was a huge undertaking. Not without mishaps, frustrations, injuries, and tears aplenty let me tell you.

more of the renovation .... just click.

So, finally after a year and a half... all plumbing is now functional. We had a few leaks in the faucets and connections so very near the end of it all .. ... but finally got everything working perfectly. Strangely we had no leaks in all the other major plumbing we did way back at the rough-in stage. Damn connectors! Why couldn't they all work properly. And..had to send the tub faucet all the way back to Germany and wait 6 weeks for the second one to show up. A small flaw in the chrome and another dribble....sigh...

There is still a cabinet to build beside the sink, that also will house a laundry chute.. ... and work to do between the sconce lights... and a few other small things... but for the main part it is finished. What a relief!

our European spa look

A job of this magnitude is not for the faint of heart, as we did it all ourselves. The only thing we did not do was install the shower glass. Sometimes I wish we had been filming some of the antics ..... but then .. maybe not. Although two smallish people hoisting a 10 foot sheet of drywall for the ceiling can be pretty amusing ..... I think I probably shrunk another inch under the weight of that one... ..

We did it!

Hi Vee, I thought for a moment you were going to need that B&B in Carmarthenshire after all! I am pleased you liked the clip, a bit of light relief for you both after all that hard graft. You must be tickled pink with the finish, you won't want to come out of there? Well done to you both, we try and do without tradesmen much of the time, they only rip you off with there ludicrous prices and broken promises of timescales. x

Wow! What a beautiful job, Vee! Sorry that it reduced your dear hubby to tears, though. ;)

You're going to be enjoying that bathroom for years to come and long after those tears have dried.

How long did the entire project take?

tx everybody... I keep walking in and out of it myself....running my hand over the smoothness of the sink and tub....honestly it is hard to believe we went from rubble to new smelling wood..to paint and tile... and now... beautiful, clean and sleek it is.....

Vee... we began the project in June of 2006 ..... a long haul. Most of the tears were mine...... but there was one day that my Sweetie was definitely totally disappointed and disillusioned. The first type of tiny tiles behind the tub failed. The name of them was Zen and they had no mesh on the back...just a paper on the front. Several tile setters have told us nobody used them after the first few failed efforts on their parts too...so now we don't feel so bad...but it was a big expense and huge clean up and effort trying them, scraping them off, repairing spots..and doing the new ones. We still have several boxes to unload. Nobody wants them and the tile store won't take them back. The brand of tile has now been discontinued. Lesson learned. Wonder what I could do with them?... hmmmm.......
